MedusaFinal

This faux movie is called “Medusa”, while many versions of the story of Medusa exist this version focused on the one where she is turned into a monster. The story says that Medusa was one of the most beautiful women on earth, many men admired her and claimed she was more beautiful then Athena, goddess of love. Medusa became a priestess of Athena, pledging herself to a life of celibacy. While worshiping in the temple her beauty caught the attention of Poseidon, god of the sea. The story varies as to if they fell in love or he forced her, they consummated in Athena’s temple thus desecrating it. Athena was enraged by Medusas act and cursed her by stealing her beauty. She grew snake hair and a stone gaze, making it so no man could look upon her again. Medusa lost her sanity and became the monster that is later seen in the story of Perseus, luring men to be turned into stone.

Creating this poster took around 20 high definition pictures, 15 were just of snakes. To start I took a black background and added a picture of the model, adjusted the colors of the model to a (excluding her lips and around her eyes) to a green hue then darkened and increased the contrast. To create the scales I took the close up photo of the snake and selected the area around the snakes forehead and nose, then layered this selection onto the cheeks, forehead and chin of the model; changed the color the a matching green, blurring the edges, reducing the opacity, and increasing the contrast. The eyes and lips were changed to a bright yellow/orange with a high contrast on the eyes. The pupil was changed to a partially slatted look by bringing the edges inward using the clone tool and the edges of the eyes have a darker color for contrast. 15 snake pictures were used each created by using the quick selection tool on the desired area, the colors were all changed to the same green as the model, the contrast increased and the brightness adjusted to the appropriate level. The photos were blurred further back and sharper in the front to give it dimension. Black gradation is used around the edges to fade her into the shadows. The “actors” names are a serif typeface with a snake scale pattern with an inner and outer glow. The movie title and quote both have the same serif typeface with bevel and emboss with drop shadow and with a clipping mask of cracked stone, the quote also has an inner shadow. The movie title and quote have a cracked stone clipping mask to represent her cursed gaze.
